hypotoniaHypotonia or poor muscle tone, is a syndrome with characteristics of different diseases. In all cases the main symptoms are: the decrease or lack of movement, muscle weakness and decreased muscle tone.

There are two types of hypotonia:

• Paralytic reduced or lack of forward movement and is due to a problem in the Central Nervous System.

• No paralytic: characterized by decreased muscle tone without affecting motility.

It is difficult to establish the diagnosis and origin of the disease, which is often neurological in origin. May originate in the central nervous system or peripheral nervous system.

Symptoms may show hypotonia at birth or in general in very young children. Cases can be mild or progressive, leading to cause disability.

Malnourished children, abandoned, with hypothyroidism or those who have lacked psychomotor stimulation, are more likely to suffer from hypotonia.

There are also hypotonia of genetic origin, as in the case of: spinal atrophy, or Pompe disease or glycogen storage myopathies. Other hypotonia may be due to disease or injury suffered during the first months or years of life.

Hypotonia is a syndrome manifested primarily by decreased muscle tone, increased joint mobility and disordered abnormal postures.
