Top 7 Tips to Nappy Changing

1. Believe that the nappy change can be a comfortable and calm experience. This part of parenting doesn’t have to be a dreaded chore. With practice, you can get into good nappy changing habits that will guarantee you less frustration in caring for your little one, and more shared smiles.

2. Assemble in advance all necessary equipment. Always have on hand nappies, baby wipes, lotion and baby powder if needed.

3. Clean thoroughly. As a responsible parent or caregiver, don’t be shy about wiping down folds on your child’s body. She depends on you for hygiene. Use gentle but effective motions to wipe. Wipe a baby girl from front to back. This prevents fecal manner from entering the urinary tract. Use a fresh baby wipe for each additional swipe, so as not to reintroduce germs.

4. Position the nappy. If your baby is a girl, position a cloth nappy under her private area in case of unexpected dribbles. Avoid sudden showers by your baby boy by covering up his private area with a cloth nappy.

5. Communicate with your child. Take advantage of the nappy change time to sing to your baby, share jokes, tickle mildly and giggle together. The nappy change doesn’t have to be all about duty.

6. Clean up properly after each nappy change and toss use nappies immediately. This will ensure a sanitary and pleasant area for your child at all times. It will also make the changing station a more convenient space where an adult can work.

7. Wash your hands by soaping for ten seconds and then rinsing well. If your baby has soiled her hands or you suspect as much, wash her hands too. If your baby absolutely refuses to have his hands washed, scrub gently but firmly with a baby wipe or two. Alcohol gel can be an alternative for an adult, but if you use it on a baby, make sure that no sting lingers. Otherwise it can burn your child’s eyes or leave an unpleasant taste in his mouth.
